\u00a0I am honored to stand in front of you all to say a few words of remembrance in honor of my aunt Halla Ziza Gecaj Bajraktari, on behalf of my father Rrustem Gecaj and the entire Gecaj Family.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
A woman with a personality, larger than life itself. Halla Ziz was born in Lluk E Ult, Decan and lived in the Gecaj’s kulla, an Albanian stone fortress. My grandparents Arif & Tima Gecaj instilled in her the best Albanian values: Wisdom, strength, nobility, hard work, pride, generosity, respect, family values, love for the family and so much more.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
She always carried those traits with her wherever she traveled, whenever she was faced with life\u2019s hardships, change and challenges.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Halla Ziz had the wisdom to make the best out of any circumstance. At the same time was willing to do whatever was necessary to get her point across. She was a visionary that put family first and had declared that February 24, 1970, the day her and her family came to the US, was the brightest day of her life. Even though she was against leaving Kosova and her family behind. We are eternally grateful for the decision she made, as today, my family and every Gecaj member, in the United States is here because of her. Although she left Kosova and her family behind she always turned her head back and had an inseparable connection to her country of origin, family and had an instinct of helping everyone out.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Since I was little kid, I always looked up to her. There was so much power in her attitude, meaning in her words and thoughtfulness in her decisions. I still can remember her strength in argument, when she would argue with my father, nobody else was able to speak to my father as she did. Growing up this really left an impact on me. Halla Ziz lived a full life; She has had a positive impact on so many peoples life\u2019s and at the same time was surrounded by so much love.\u00a0 I still have a picture of her face imbedded in my head the day that I told her I was going to name my daughter after my grandmother, her mother. Her face lit up with joy, excitement, pride, and happiness that overcame her. My entire family and I will always miss her and she will always remain in our hearts.<\/div>\n

Today it is not only about farewells, today we also celebrate a woman larger than life, that is comparable to a character out of a fairy tale. Her legacy and story will always live on to be told and carried over. Thank You<\/div>\n

When I look around this room, I see how many lives my grandmother has touched. I feel the love and respect everyone has for her and I thank each and everyone one of you for being here- Nona always had the ability to bring everyone together.<\/div>\n

Over the last few days, I’ve been reflecting on how much she’s influenced myself and the person I’ve become. I think you can ask just about anyone who knows me and knew her and they’ll tell you, she has more than rubbed off on me.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I’d like to share a memory with you. Not only because it’s a favorite but I really feel it showcases this point. A few years ago, I hosted a birthday party for my brother Florim. I was determined to do it all on my own. I was going to cook everything and set up the house, it was going to be great.<\/div>\n
Well, little did I know- Nona found out and was determined to NOT let me do it alone. Once she had made up her mind up about something, there was no sense in trying to change it.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
So she comes over, rolls up her sleeves and starts helping me prep for the event. We spent the entire afternoon cooking, laughing and singing around the kitchen. That afternoon was a reminder of how similar we were.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We were both stubborn, stuck in our own ways. Looking back; we never followed a recipe,\u00a0God forbid we’d use a measuring cup.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We’ve always bonded over our love for food and cooking. So many memories of her are tied to food. I grew up with her always around, she’d have lunch waiting for me after school, we’d take weekend trips to the Arthur Ave markets.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Even when she moved to Yonkers, I’d spend every summer vacation, weekend and days off with her. We’d always take the same walks to the store for Haagen Dazs strawberry ice cream. I’d always wake up every morning to the same egg sandwich and sweet tea.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
You see, Nona was more than a mother, sister, aunt or grandmother, she was home- she was my home. My home always smelled of Nivea lotion, wore a vest and headscarf, and was always warm and welcoming. Writing a speech like this is much more difficult than it seems.\u00a0 On Wednesday my mother mentioned to me the idea of saying a couple words and I was honored at the thought. I have so much to say, so much to tell. But when it came time to writing this, it was much more difficult to do. How could I express the memories, stories and wisdom that Nona instilled in me in just a few minutes.\u00a0 I was making this piece so much more difficult than it needed to be, I needed to keep it simple.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In that process I thought about the influence Nona left me with, she had her pride, her respect and of course her culture. But when I think about it, Nona left us all with hope. Hope, the feeling of a certain thing to happen, a feeling of trust. Nona had a lot of hope throughout her lifetime, whether it was the years spent in Kosova, the life she worked for in America, and the future she had for her family. That feeling of hope is what carried her throughout all of these years, it’s hope that gave her the strength she possessed.<\/div>\n

I hope Nona lived the life she wanted to live. I hope Nona saw the amount of lives she impacted. I hope her selflessness is something we can all learn from. I hope we are able to carry out the traditions she wanted us to continue. I hope we make her proud. I hope we are able continue the legacy that she and baba Met have left for us.\u00a0 Our parents, aunts and uncles have been instilled with this idea, and carry this torch of hope on a daily basis.<\/div>\n
The chapter on Nona\u2019s legacy has ended, but that doesn’t mean the story ends, it just means a new chapter begins. A new chapter for us to take that hope and carry it on to the next generations. Take what Nona Zize embodied and always carry it with you.<\/div>\n

Nana Zize was many things to many people \u2013 she was a daughter, a sister, a mother, a grandmother and even a great grandmother. But most importantly Nana Zize was an amazing woman.\u00a0 She was strong<\/span> and kind<\/span>, stubborn<\/span> but understanding<\/span>, strict<\/span> yet loving<\/span>.\u00a0 Each of which made her the wonderful person she was\u2026<\/div>\n

SHE WAS STRONG<\/span>: Not many women would pick up her kids and move half way across the world with her husband, not knowing where they would end up or what they would find, in hopes for a better life.\u00a0 And get a job cleaning office buildings at night so she can be with the kids during the day \u2013 All for a better future\u2026<\/div>\n

SHE WAS KIND:<\/span>\u00a0 Nana always looked to help out people. She always tried to help out those that needed it. She loved to do and buy things for relatives that had less than her.\u00a0 I never knew why and always gave her a hard time about it. She would always say to me:\u00a0 \u201cNan\u00eb xhynah e bajm sevap me ta\u201d<\/div>\n

SHE WAS STUBBORN:<\/span> When Nana set her mind to something, Good Luck on getting her to change it.\u00a0 She like to do what she wanted when she wanted regardless of what you wanted or if it was the time or place for it\u2026<\/div>\n

SHE WAS UNDERSTANDING:<\/span> Even though she had a stubbornness about her, Nana Zize was a very understanding person.\u00a0 She loved to joke with you about things but sometimes that was it, just a joke.\u00a0 She understood that everyone had things going on in their lives making it hard to visit as much\u2026 For example: Within a few months I had graduated college, got a job and got married.\u00a0 I now lived in NJ and worked 6\/7days a week and crazy long hours. So of course, I wasn\u2019t able to visit her as much and I guess my phone calls weren\u2019t enough for her.\u00a0 So one day she turned to me and goes, \u201cOj \u00e7ika jeme je hup krejt. Te mori Beci krejt per veti.\u201d And we both laughed.\u00a0 I explained how hard the new job was and living so far made it even harder to come see her.\u00a0 But she understood and said, \u201cUne jam vetem ka mahitna me ty se Nana e din se je shum e zane.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
SHE WAS STRICT:<\/span>\u00a0 Boy could Nana be strict sometimes and wouldn\u2019t budge when she was.\u00a0 Nana always cared what people thought or what people would say if they saw you there.\u00a0 This was really hard for me because I never cared what people said or thought about me.\u00a0 One night all the older cousins were going to the movies and Daja Mike asked Gani and me if we wanted to go.\u00a0 Of course we were excited and said yes. We went to let Nana know we were going with everyone to the movies. She turned around and explained \u201cGanija mundet me shkue e ti jo se pot e shofin njerzit e po folin per ty. Edhe Baba Met\u00eb nuk ka me te lane me shkue. Por un\u00eb po e veti baben.\u201d\u00a0 So Nana headed to the room where he was resting to ask him if it was ok. He told her it was fine and he had no problem. She then went on and on how it was inappropriate to let me go and what if someone saw me with all guys, what would they say about me. He then turned to her and told her to do whatever she wanted.\u00a0 So Nana came back out of the room and said, \u201cBaba ka thane mos me shkue se po t\u00eb shofin nj\u00ebrzit.\u00a0 E ke televizorin e mundesh me pa filma boll.\u201d\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t believe it she wasn\u2019t letting me go and wouldn\u2019t budge at all no matter what I said.\u00a0 And if that wasn\u2019t bad enough, I couldn\u2019t believe it that Daja Mike and Gani went anyway\u2026<\/div>\n
But most importantly:<\/div>\n

SHE WAS LOVING:<\/span> Nana Zize loved all of us.\u00a0 She had a special place in her heart for each and every one of us.\u00a0 She was proud to call us her children and her grandchildren.\u00a0 And all of us were very proud to have had her as our mother and grandmother\u2026<\/div>\n

Most people don’t have the opportunity to see their grandparents as often as they like, but I was fortunate enough to live with my grandmother for the past 19 years. Nona Zize was more than a grandmother to me; she was like a second mom, a best friend, and the greatest roommate ever. Nona and I have shared a lot of memories and time together and I am so grateful for each and every single moment. Some of the best being, chasing my brothers and I around the house with food when we were younger, making sure the pool water was warm enough for us to swim in, going to Carvel because that was her favorite ice cream, and being called Ziza Jr. because I would walk around the house in a shami as a toddler and child.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I never realized the imprint Nona was leaving on me all these years. The importance of respect, culture, and tradition was what Nona lived by. She always welcomed others with open arms and a beautiful smile. She was a well-rounded person who knew the importance of what it meant to be a good person with the right values, morals, and beliefs.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Respect, culture, and tradition, is not the only thing Nona left behind. She left 5 children, 18 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren with one on the way. She impacted each and every single one of our lives in one way or other. From her oldest grandchild to her youngest great grandchild, she left a mark in all of our hearts. A mark of love, hope, and strength. Love, for all of the times she was there during our good times and bad. Hope, for giving us something to look forward to, and strength, to show us how strong her last few years were while she was sick. She was the backbone of our family and left us with everything we know now to be the family she wanted to leave behind. The family that will continue to carry on her values, morals, and traditions.<\/div>\n

As a baby, toddler, and child Nona was there to watch me, feed me, and care for me, but as time went on and Nona and I got both older, suddenly the roles changed. That’s just the cycle of life and how this world works. We leave this world the same way we came in, and I hope I was able to give Nona Zize the same attention, care, and love she gave me. I hope I was able to return back to her all of the good she did for me, and most importantly I hope she is finally at peace with herself.<\/div>\n

I have had the pleasure of living with Nona Zize these past 19 years and the absolute honor of having the right to call her my grandmother. It is a privilege to call myself her granddaughter and I hope that one day I can be half the person she was. Nona, thank you for everything you have done for our family, thank you for the imprint you have left on us, and thank you for being you. May you rest in peace and always look over us, forever our Nona.<\/div>\n
